It’s hard to know where to begin. It was not until my daughter Sachi (our nickname for Michelle Sachiko) became an adult that she began to get interested in family history. So, I began this tale from my iPhone trying to think of how to tell the tale of my two uncles and my father-in-law. The three men could not have been more different nor further apart. Two came from Akron, Ohio and one from Los Angeles, California. Two were from families that had immigrated from the British Isles and the third family came from Japan to California. Part of Jim’s family came to America on the Mayflower and as Will Rogers used to say, “the other part of the family met them when they got off the boat.” Referring to the native American part of the family.

I thought this would be easy when I began this journey. The internment and deportation of American citizens had appalled me. And yet I had no idea of just how cruel Americans could be to one another.
